Herpetologi (Bahasa Yunani: ἑρπετόν herpeton = melata, dan λόγος logos = penjelasan atau alasan) adalah cabang ilmu zoologi yang mempelajari kehidupan reptilia dan amfibia.[1] Batrakologi (batrachology) adalah cabang herpetologi yang khusus mempelajari amfibia.

Sesungguhnya, objek kajian ilmu ini adalah vertebrata "berdarah dingin" (poikiloterm) yang berkaki empat (tetrapoda). Dengan demikian istilah "herpetofauna" (sering disingkat "herpet" atau "herps" saja) tidak mencakup ikan; meskipun para herpetolog dan iktiolog acap bekerjasama, baik di lapangan maupun dalam pertukaran dan penyebar luasan gagasan.

Herpetologi makin banyak dipelajari seiring dengan berkembangnya kecenderungan menjadikan reptil sebagai hewan peliharaan. Selain itu, banyak anggota dari kedua kelompok besar hewan ini yang menghasilkan bisa/racun yang, di antaranya, dapat digunakan sebagai bahan baku obat-obatan bagi penyakit jantung dan stroke.

Karier

Ada banyak karier pada bidang herpetologi. Ini termasuk, tetapi tidak terbatas pada, bidang penelitian, pembiakan umum dan swasta, kurator ilmu hewan, profesor akademi, kurator museum.

Bagi yang ingin berkarier di bidang ini harus mempunyai latar belakang yang kuat di bidang ilmu pasti dan matematika. Hanya beberapa universitas yang menawarkan program studi di bidang ini, sehingga membuat bidang ini sangat langka dan banyak dicari.

Dalam dunia ilmu pengetahuan modern, sangat jarang seseorang dianggap sebagai ahli herpetologi. Banyak orang lebih memfokuskan diri di bidang cabangnya seperti ekologi, evolusi, taksonomi, fisiologi, atau biologi molekular, dan biasanya bidang yang diambil adalah dengan penelitian pada amfibi atau serangga. Sebagai contoh, seorang ahli biologi evolusi yang juga seorang ahli herpetolgi bisa memilih untuk meneliti perubahan warna yang terjadi pada ular koral.
