Wasith adalah sebuah kota tua yang berada di antara Baghdad dan Basrah di Irak, di sisi barat Tigris di seberang sungai dari kota bersejarah Kashkar. Sekarang tempat ini berada dalam wilayah Kegubernuran Wasith, Irak bagian timur. Wilayah ini telah dimasukkan kedalam Daftar Tentatif Situs Warisan Dunia oleh UNESCO pada tanggal 7 September 2000 untuk kategori Budaya.[1]

Sejarah

Kota ini dibangun oleh Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf sebagai pusat administrasi bagi negeri Irak di akhir abad pertama Hijriyah (702 M). Kota ini pula tempat dimana Al-Hajaj meninggal pada 714 M.[2] Lingkupan keliling kotanya mencapai hingga 16 kilometer untuk sebuah kota kuno. Kota ini sempat ditinggalkan pada abad kesepuluh Hijriah akibat perubahan aliran sungai Tigris, tetapi kota tetap mampu bertahan karena lokasi yang jauh dari pengaruh pembangunan dan pertanian. Sebagian besar dari bangunannya menggunakan batu bata.[1]
