Warren Hastings

Warren Hastings (lahir 6 Desember 1732 di Churchill, Oxfordshire, Inggris - meninggal 22 Agustus 1818 di Daylesford, Oxfordshire pada umur 85 tahun) adalah seorang gubernur jenderal Britania Raya di India yang pertama.^[1]^[2]

Hastings adalah anak dari seorang pendeta Gereja di Inggris.^[1] Sejak kecil ia telah ditinggal ayahnya dan diasuh serta diberi pendidikan oleh pamannya.^[1] Hastings menempuh pendidikan formalnya di Sekolah Westminster di London.^[1] Di sekolahnya tersebut, ia memiliki ketertarikan pada bidang sastra dan ilmiah yang kemudian memberinya minat yang serius pada budaya dan peradaban India.^[1] Hastings berhenti dari sekolahnya pada tahun 1749 dikarenakan kematian pamannya.^[1] Ia pindah dari sekolahnya dan mendapat beasiswa dari pemerintah berupa sebuah panggilan dari Perusahaan Hindia Timur Britania.^[1]^[2] Kemudian pada umur 17 tahun, Hastings melakukan perjalanan ke Benggala.^[1]

Hastings mendarat di Kolkata pada bulan Oktober 1750.^[2] Di Benggala, selain bekerja di perusahaan ia juga mencoba peruntungan untuk menjadi penulis.^[2] Pada awalnya, sebagai salah satu pekerja perusahaan ia dipekerjakan pada bagian bisnis komersial.^[1] Pada tahun 1756, perusahaan ini terlibat dalam permusuhan dengan Prancis dan penguasa India.^[1] Namun di bawah pimpinan Robert Clive, tentaranya mampu menggulingkan gubernur India dalam Pertempuran Plassey tahun 1757.^[1] Pada saat itulah para pekerja, termasuk Hastings, mulai ditarik ke dalam urusan politik India.^[1] Pada tahun 1758 hingga 1761, Hastings menjabat sebagai wakil perusahaan di istana gubernur Benggala.^[1]
