Turbodiesel

Turbodiesel mengacu pada setiap mesin diesel dilengkapi dengan turbocharger. Turbocharger umum di mobil dan truk mesin diesel modern untuk menghasilkan keluaran tenaga yang lebih tinggi, tingkat emisi yang lebih rendah, dan meningkatkan efisiensi dari kapasitas mesin yang sama.^[1] Turbodiesel di mobil menawarkan kelebihan daripada mesin diesel yang sama namun hanya naturally aspirated.^[2]

Perbaikan pada daya, ekonomi bahan bakar, kebisingan, getaran, dan kekerasan di kedua turbodiesel berkapasitas kecil dan besar selama dekade terakhir telah memacu penggunaan mesin jenis ini tersebar luas di banyak pasar, terutama di Eropa di mana (per 2014) lebih dari 50% dari daftar penjualan mobil baru.^[3]^[4] Turbodiesel umumnya dianggap lebih fleksibel untuk keperluan otomotif dari mesin diesel naturally aspirated, yang memiliki output torsi kuat pada kecepatan rendah tetapi tidak bertenaga pada kecepatan tinggi. Turbodiesel dapat dirancang untuk memiliki sebaran yang lebih dapat diterima baik pada tenaga dan torsi selama rentang kecepatan mereka atau jika dibuat untuk penggunaan komersial, dapat dirancang untuk meningkatkan baik torsi atau daya pada kecepatan tertentu tergantung pada penggunaan yang tepat. Mesin diesel naturally aspirated, hampir pasti memiliki output daya yang lebih rendah daripada mesin bensin berkapasitas yang sama. Sementara pada saat yang sama, mesin diesel membutuhkan komponen internal yang lebih kuat seperti piston dan crankshaft untuk menahan tekanan yang lebih besar akibat siklus operasi mesin diesel. Berat unit turbocharger sangat kecil tetapi menawarkan kenaikan torsi dan peningkatan efisiensi yang signifikan.
