Thiruvananthapuram (Malayalam: തിരുവനന്തപുരം), yang juga dikenal dengan nama terdahulunya Trivandrum, adalah ibu kota Negara Bagian Kerala, India. Kota ini terletak di pesisir barat India dekat ujung daratan subbenua India. Kota ini merupakan kota terbesar di Kerala dalam hal penduduk, dengan populasi sebanyak 957.730 jiwa (sensus tahun 2011)[1] dan populasi aglomerasi urban sebanyak 1.68 juta jiwa.[2]

Kota ini menyumbang hampir 80% dari ekspor perangkat lunak Negara Bagian Kerala,[3] sehingga sering dianggap sebagai pusat teknologi informasi di negara bagian tersebut. Selain itu, Mahatma Gandhi juga pernah menjuluki kota ini sebagai "Kota Hijau India", dikarenakan topografi bergelombangnya yang khas, terdiri dari bukit-bukit, hutan yang subur, dan garis pantai yang panjang dan berkelok-kelok.[4]

Asal nama

Secara harfiah, nama kota ini berasal dari kata-kata bahasa Malayalam thiru-anantha-puram, yang berarti 'Kota Tuan Besar Ananta'.[5] Nama itu diturunkan dari dewa utama dari kuil Hindu di pusat kota, Kuil Sri Padmanabhaswamy. Secara resmi, kota ini dikenal sebagai Trivandrum—nama Inggris kota tersebut—sampai tahun 1991,[6] sampai akhirnya dikembalikan ke ejaan awal, Thiruvananthapuram.

Sejarah

Wilayah Thiruvananthapuram saat ini pernah dikuasai Dinasti Ay hingga abad ke-10, sebelum diambil alih oleh Dinasti Chera. Kota ini kemudian diambil alih oleh Kerajaan Venad pada abad ke-12.[7] Pada abad ke-17, Raja Marthanda Varma memperluas wilayahnya menjadikan Thiruvananthapuram sebagai ibukota Kerajaan Travancore.[8] Setelah India merdeka pada tahun 1947, Thiruvananthapuram menjadi ibu kota negara bagian Travancore-Cochin, dan tetap menjadi ibu kota ketika Negara Bagian Kerala dibentuk pada tahun 1956.[9]

Tonggak penting dalam sejarah kota baru-baru ini adalah pendirian Technopark—taman teknologi informasi pertama di India—pada tahun 1995. Technopark telah berkembang menjadi taman teknologi informasi terbesar di kawasan tersebut, mempekerjakan lebih dari 30.000 orang di 225 perusahaan.[10]
