The Call of the Simpsons

The Call of the Simpsons adalah episode ke-7 musim pertama dari acara animasi The Simpsons. Episode ini pertama kali ditayangkan di stasiun televisi Fox di AS pada tanggal 18 Februari 1990. Episode ini ditulis oleh John Swartzwelder dan disutradarai oleh Wesley Archer. Albert Brooks menjadi bintang tamu untuk pertama kalinya dengan menyuarai koboi Bob. Di episode ini, Homer Simpson iri terhadap tetangganya, Ned Flanders, yang baru saja membeli mobil karavan super canggih.


Sinopsis

Homer dan Bart melihat bahwa Ned Flanders, tetangga mereka baru saja membeli sebuah mobil karavan yang sangat canggih. Homer lalu memutuskan juga ingin memiliki mobil karavan yang canggih.

Kemudian mereka sekeluarga pergi ke toko mobil milik si Koboi Bob. Di sana ia memilih sebuah karavan yang lebih bagus daripada milik Flanders bernama the Behemoth. Namun, ketika daya bayarnya diperiksa oleh penjual, lampu merah di atas komputernya menyala. Ia tidak boleh membeli the Behemoth memakai kredit. Sebagai gantinya Homer membeli sebuah karavan butut.

Dengan karavan butut, Homer sekeluarga pergi berlibur. Karavannya tidak bisa berjalan cepat sehingga menyebabkan macet. Lalu ia tersesat di hutan dan karavannya bersama segala isinya jatuh ke jurang, setelah keluarga Homer dan dirinya bisa menyelamatkan diri. Namun mereka tidak memiliki bekal apa-apa. Marge dan Lisa membuat sebuah gubuk yang rapi. Sementara itu Homer dan Bart pergi mencari makan. Homer mengaku seorang pramuka ahli. Tanpa sepengetahuan mereka, mereka diikuti oleh si bayi Maggie. Mereka berdua jatuh di sungai dan kehilangan baju mereka sementara Maggie dibawa pergi oleh seekor beruang. Beruang ini mengurusi Maggie secara selanjutnya. Ketika malam tiba, Marge tidur dengan nyaman bersama Lisa. Namun, Homer dan Bart menggigil kedinginan.

Keesokan harinya, Homer mencoba makan madu. Namun, disengat labah di tenggorokannya sehingga tak bisa bicara. Ia lalu mencari air dan jatuh di sungai berlumpur. Ketika naik secara sengaja ia divideo oleh seorang pecinta alam. Lalu pecinta alam ini mengira Homer adalah seekor Bigfoot.

Akhirnya mereka semua diselamatkan dan pulang ke rumah.

Oleh para ilmuwn disimpulkan bahwa Homer Simpson adalah seorang manusia primitif atau seekor hewan yang kecerdasannya luar biasa.

Produksi

James L. Brooks awalnya yang memberikan gagasan untuk cerita episode ini yang kemudian bakal dihapus.

Akhirnya episode ini ditulis oleh John Swartzwelder dan disutradarai oleh Wesley Archer. James L. Brooks memberi ide mengenai Homer yang dibawa pergi ke sebuah sarang burung elang dan dibesarkan di sana sebagai elang muda. Namun ide ini tidak dilanjutkan, gantinya ada kisah mengenai Maggie yang dibesarkan oleh sekelompok beruang.


Adegan percakapan Marge dan Lisa di dekat api unggun semula durasinye lebih lama dan memuat percakapan mengenai cowok, tetapi tidak dimasukkan ke episode. Di skrip awal, Homer dan Bart tidak bercakap-cakap apapun, ketika mereka menutupi alat kelamin mereka dengan lumpur dan lumut, tetapi penulis Sam Simon berpendapat bahwa kesempatan ini terlalu lucu untuk dilewatkan dan menambahkan sebuah dialog.

Albert Brooks menjadi bintang tamu di episode ini dengan menyuarai si Koboi Bob. Kala itu belum pasti apakah ia mau diidentifikasikan dengan sebuah pertunjukan kartun.
