Studi Korea

Studi Korea adalah sebuah cabang ilmu pengetahuan atau disiplin ilmu yang mempelajari tentang Korea.

Bidang-bidang yang dikaji dalam Studi Korea antara lain bahasa, seni, musik, kemanusiaan, ilmu sosial, sastra, kebudayaan dan sebagainya.

Motif orang-orang untuk mempelajari Korea pada masa kini berkembang pesat salah satunya dikarenakan hallyu, menyebarnya budaya pop Korea ke banyak negara. Hallyu membuat Korea dipandang lewat cara baru dan menarik perhatian pelajar atau ilmuwan untuk meneliti tentang hallyu.

Studi Korea kadang-kadang dimasukkan dalam area yang lebih luas, misalnya "Studi Asia Timur", "Studi Timur Jauh", "Studi Oriental", atau "Studi Asia."

Istilah ini pertama kali digunakan pada tahun 1940-an, tetapi belum dikenal luas sampai Korea Selatan mencapai kemakmuran ekonomi pada tahun 1970-an. Pada tahun 1991, pemerintah Korea Selatan mendirikan Korea Foundation untuk mempromosikan Studi Korea di seluruh dunia.^[1]

Koreanolog

Istilah Koreanolog (Koreanologists) merujuk kepada ilmuwan akademi (asing) yang menguasai bahasa dan budaya Korea. Koreanis (Koreanists) merujuk kepada penerjemah atau penguasa bahasa Korea. Koreanolog yang terkenal antara lain James Scarth Gale, William E. Skillend dan Richard Rutt. Subkategori Koreanolog, salah satunya adalah Sejarawan Korea, ilmuwan-ilmuwan yang terkenal antara lain Bruce Cumings, James Palais, Roger Tennant dan sebagainya.
