Studi Abad Pertengahan

Studi abad pertengahan adalah kajian akademis yang bersifat interdisipliner tentang Abad Pertengahan. Seorang sejarawan yang mempelajari studi abad pertengahan disebut medievalis.

Pengembangan kelembagaan

Istilah "studi abad pertengahan" mulai diadopsi oleh para akademisi pada dekade-dekade awal abad kedua puluh, terutama dalam judul-judul buku seperti Ten Medieval Studies (1906) karya G. G. Coulton untuk menekankan pendekatan yang lebih interdisipliner terhadap subjek sejarah. Langkah besar dalam institusionalisasi bidang ini adalah pendirian Mediaeval (sekarang Medieval) Academy of America pada tahun 1925. Di universitas-universitas Amerika dan Eropa, istilah studi abad pertengahan memberikan identitas yang koheren bagi pusat-pusat yang terdiri dari akademisi dari berbagai disiplin ilmu, termasuk arkeologi, sejarah seni, arsitektur, sejarah, sastra, dan linguistik.
