Seorang sinden dari Solo

Sinden (dari Bahasa Jawa) atau Waranggana adalah sebutan bagi wanita yang bernyanyi mengiringi orkestra gamelan, umumnya sebagai penyanyi satu-satunya. Sinden yang baik harus mempunyai kemampuan komunikasi yang luas dan keahlian vokal yang baik serta kemampuan untuk menyanyikan tembang.

Pesinden juga sering disebut sinden, menurut Ki Mujoko Joko Raharjo berasal dari kata "pasindhian" yang berarti yang kaya akan lagu atau yang melagukan (melantunkan lagu). Sinden juga disebut waranggana "wara" berarti seseorang berjenis kelamin wanita, dan "anggana" berarti sendiri. Pada zaman dahulu waranggana adalah satu-satunya wanita dalam panggung pergelaran wayang ataupun pentas klenengan. Sinden memang seorang wanita yang menyanyi sesuai dengan gendhing yang di sajikan baik dalam klenengan maupun pergelaran wayang. Istilah sinden juga digunakan untuk menyebut hal yang sama di beberapa daerah seperti Banyumas, Yogyakarta, Sunda, Jawa Timur dan daerah lainnya, yang berhubungan dengan pergelaran wayang maupun klenengan. Sinden tidak hanya tampil solo (satu orang) dalam pergelaran tetapi untuk saat ini pada pertunjukan wayang bisa mencapai delapan hingga sepuluh orang bahkan lebih untuk pergelaran yang sifatnya spektakuler.

Pada pergelaran wayang zaman dulu, Sinden duduk di belakang Dalang, tepatnya di belakang tukang gender dan di depan tukang Kendhang. Hanya seorang diri dan biasanya istri dari Dalangnya ataupun salah satu pengrawit dalam pergelaran tersebut. Tetapi seiring perkembangan zaman, terutama pada era Ki Narto Sabdho yang melakukan berbagai pengembangan, sinden dialihkan tempatnya menghadap ke penonton tepatnya di sebelah kanan Dalang membelakangi simpingan wayang dengan jumlah lebih dari dua orang.

Di era modern sekarang ini Sindén mendapatkan posisi yang hampir sama dengan artis penyanyi campursari, bahkan sinden tidak hanya dibutuhkan untuk mahir dalam menyajikan lagu tetapi juga harus menjaga penampilan, dengan berpakaian yang rapi dan menarik. Sinden tidak jarang menjadi "pepasren" (penghias) sebuah panggung pertunjukan wayang. Bila Sindénnya cantik-cantik dan muda yang nonton akan lebih kerasan dalam menikmati pertunjukan wayang. Perkembangan wayang saat ini bahkan sinden tidak hanya didominasi wanita tetapi telah muncul beberapa orang sinden laki-laki yang mempunyai suara merdu seperti wanita, tetapi dalam dandannya sinden ini tetap memakai pakaian adat Jawa selayaknya pengrawit pria lainnya dan beberapa waktu lalu sinden laki-laki ini malah menjadi trend para Dalang untuk menghasilkan nilai lebih pada pergelarannya.
