Sedimentasi

Sedimentasi atau pengendapan adalah suatu proses mengendapnya material yang diangkut oleh media air, angin, es atau gletser di suatu cekungan.[1] Delta yang terdapat di mulut-mulut sungai adalah hasil dan proses pengendapan material-material yang diangkut oleh air sungai, sedangkan bukit pasir (sand dunes) yang terdapat di gurun dan di tepi pantai adalah pengendapan dari material-material yang diangkut oleh angin.[2]

Jenis Sedimentasi

sedimentasi dapat dibedakan:

  1. Sedimentasi air, misalnya terjadi di sungai.
  2. Sedimentasi angin, biasanya disebut sedimentasi aeolis
  3. Sedimentasi gletser, mengahasilkan drumlin, moraine, ketles dan esker.

Dalam bidang kimia

Dalam bidang kimia, sedimentasi telah digunakan untuk mengukur ukuran molekul besar (makromolekul), di mana gaya gravitasi ditambah dengan gaya sentrifugal dalam ultrasentrifugasi.

Keseimbangan sedimentasi

Ketika partikel-partikel yang mengendap dari suspensi mencapai batas yang keras, konsentrasi partikel pada batas tersebut dilawan oleh difusi partikel. Distribusi sedimen di dekat batas tersebut masuk ke dalam keseimbangan sedimentasi. Pengukuran distribusi menghasilkan informasi tentang sifat partikel.[3][4]

Hasil

Hasil dari sedimentasi ini dapat berupa batuan breksi dan batuan konglomerat yang terendapkan tidak jauh dari sumbernya, batu pasir yang terendapkan lebih jauh dari batu breksi dan batuan konglomerat, serta lempung yang terendapkan jauh dari sumbernya.
