Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken adalah sebuah film animasi Amerika Serikat tahun 2023 yang disutradarai oleh Kirk DeMicco, ditulis oleh Pam Brady, Brian C. Brown dan Elliott DiGuiseppi, serta diproduseri oleh Kelly Cooney Cilella. Pengisi suara dalam film tersebut meliputi Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Annie Murphy, Colman Domingo, Jaboukie Young-White dan Liza Koshy.[1]

Sinopsis

Lima belas tahun yang lalu, sebuah pasangan kraken, Agatha dan Peter pergi meninggalkan lautan untuk membesarkan anak-anak mereka di darat, tepatnya Oceanside. Terlepas dari rintangan yang jelas--warna tubuh mereka yang mencolok--mereka cukup berhasil berbaur dengan manusia.

Setiap kali seseorang mencurigai mereka, Ruby Gillman selalu diajarkan oleh kedua orangtua untuk menjawab "aku berasal dari Kanada" dan itu berhasil. Hal itu adalah sebuah konstruksi sosial terkait Kanada sebagai sebuah negara yang menyambut baik setiap orang dari belahan dunia manapun. Meskipun begitu, Ruby kian tidak nyaman dengan dirinya yang berbeda dan harus menghabiskan seumur hidupnya untuk menyamar. Satu hal yang paling ia kesali adalah larangan dari sang ibu untuk pergi ke sekitar lautan karena akan ada hal yang berbahaya terjadi.

Semua itu menjadi semakin sulit beberapa hari sebelum pesta prom, ketika Ruby menyelam ke laut untuk menyelamatkan pujaan hatinya, Connor. Siapa sangka, kontak dengan air laut membangkitkan sesuatu jauh di dalam Ruby dan melepaskan kraken yang selama ini tersembunyi, "Ternyata selama ini aku monster?," ucap Ruby.
