Reaksi Belousov-Zhabotinsky adalah salah satu reaksi yang menjadi contoh klasik termodinamika tidak setimbang yang menghasilkan osilator kimia nonlinier. Reaksi ini merupakan reaksi yang penting dalam kimia teoretis karena membuktikan bahwa reaksi kimia tidak harus didominasi oleh termodinamika setimbang. Reaksi-reaksi ini jauh dari kesetimbangan dan tetap jauh dari kesetimbangan untuk waktu yang lama, sehingga reaksi ini dianggap sebagai salah satu contoh teori kekacauan.[1] Unsur penting dari reaksi BZ adalah sifatnya yang dapat "dirangsang"; apabila dirangsang oleh suatu stimuli, muncul pola di medium yang seharusnya tenang.

Mekanisme reaksi ini sangat rumit dan diduga terdiri dari 18 langkah yang telah diteliti oleh para ilmuwan.[2][3] Terdapat dua proses kunci (keduanya bersifat autokatalisis): proses A menghasilkan brom molekular dan menghasilkan warna merah, sementara proses B mengkonsumsi brom untuk mengeluarkan ion bromid.[4] Salah satu variasi yang paling umum adalah reaksi asam malonat (CH2(CO2H)2) dengan kalium bromat (KBrO3) sebagai sumber brom. Persamaannya adalah:[4]
