Pining bawang (Hornstedtia alliacea, sinonim: Hornstedtia conica) adalah sejenis tumbuhan penghasil buah anggota suku jahe-jahean (Zingiberaceae). Buahnya yang manis agak masam biasa dimakan dalam keadaan segar. Nama lainnya adalah ketimbang ketanim (Lampung) dan Golobe (Halmahera).[1][2]

Pengenalan

Tandan bunga muncul dekat pangkal batang. Yang berwarna merah jambu adalah labellum

Terna tahunan yang ramping, tumbuh hingga tinggi 3,5 m, membentuk rumpun yang rapat. Rimpang tertanam dangkal atau mencuat di permukaan tanah. Daun bentuk lanset sempit terbalik, 55–65 × 5–12 cm,[2] gundul di kedua permukaannya, berujung meruncing seperti ekor.[3]

Bunga dalam tandan berbentuk gelendong, lk. panjang 11 cm termasuk tangkainya. Labellum[4] panjang 3 cm, jauh lebih panjang daripada mahkota bunga, tengahnya menebal, dengan ujung membundar bertepi menggelombang.[3] Ketika menjadi buah, tandan kemudian menggembung serupa bawang besar, berdiameter 4–5 cm; buah buni majemuk tertutupi daun pelindung berlapis-lapis, bentuk jorong, 3 × 2 cm. Biji-biji kecil, lk. 2 mm, kehitaman, terlindung salut biji putih keperakan serupa lendir yang asam manis rasanya.[2]

Buahnya terutama dimakan dalam keadaan segar, disukai karena salut bijinya yang mengandung banyak sari buah yang masam manis rasanya. Buah ini juga bisa dibuat sebagai manisan.[2]

Ekologi dan penyebaran

Rumpun pining bawang

Hidup liar dan terpencar-pencar di hutan atau kebun talun, terutama pada tanah lembap yang kaya akan humus. Tumbuhan ini dapat diperbanyak dengan ujung rimpang yang berakar, meski hanya kadang-kadang saja dibudidayakan.

Menyebar di Indonesia (Jawa, Sumatra), Kalimantan,Pulau Halmahera, Provinsi Maluku dan Semenanjung Malaya, termasuk di wilayah Thailand.
