Pilar Allahabad adalah sebuah Stambha, yang terdiri dari salah satu edik-edik pilar Ashoka, yang mungkin didirikan oleh Ashoka, Kaisar dinasti Maurya, yang memerintah pada abad ke-3 SM atau mungkin lebih awal. Meskipun pilar tersebut adalah salah satu dari sedikit pilar yang masih ada yang mencantumkan edik-edik Ashoka,[3] pilar tersebut dikenal karena berisi inskripsi-inskripsi yang diatributkan kepada kaisar Gupta Samudragupta (abad ke-4 Masehi).[4] Selain itu, pilar tersebut mengandung inskripsi-inskripsi buatan kaisar Mughal Jahangir, dari abad ke-17.[2]

Menurut beberapa cendekiawan, pilar tersebut dipindahkan dari lokasi aslinya dan dipasang di Benteng Allahabad milik Akbar di Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh oleh Kaisar Akbar sendiri, meskipun teori tersebut persengketakan oleh cendekiawan lain yang menyoroti ketiadaan bukti yang menyiratkan bahwa pilar tersebut dipindahkan, dan inskripsi pra-Mughal yang menandakan bahwa pilar tersebut telah berada pada lokasi saat ininya. Sebagai benteng yang kini diduduki oleh Angkatan Darat India, masyarakat hanya diberikan akses terbatas ke tempat tersebut dan ijin khusus yang diwajibkan untuk melihat pilar tersebut.[5][6]
