Jenis huruf Optima merupakan rupa huruf tanpa kait (sans-serif) bergaya "humanis" (seperti tulisan tangan manusia) yang diciptakan oleh Herman Zapf antara tahun 1952-1955 untuk pabrik huruf Stempel AG foundry, Frankfurt, Jerman.

Sejarah

Optima berawal pada bulan Oktober 1950. Saat itu Hermann Zapf berkunjung ke Italia dan terinsiparasi oleh tulisan romawi pada lantai Gereja Santa Croce, Florence, Italy. Ia mulai membuat sketsa awal, pada uang kertas 1000 Lire, karena saat itu ia tidak memiliki kertas. Optima memiliki keunikan penggabungan dari huruf klasik romawi (seperti Bodoni) dan huruf tidak berkait (sans-serif). Selain itu Optima juga dibuat berdasarkan perhitungan "Golden Ratio". Huruf ini pertama kali dipublikasikan tahun 1958 oleh heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. Awalnya Optima diperuntukkan sebagai huruf display(Display Font), tetapi berdasarkan saran Monroe Wheeler di Museum of Modern Art di New York, maka ia merubahnya menjadi huruf teks. Optima banyak digunakan untuk huruf di publikasi seperti poster dan majalah. Optima juga digunakan sebagai logo teks oleh Universitas New South Wales, Australia. Pada tahun 2002 Hermann Zapf dan Akira Kobayashi, meredesain ulang Optima menjadi Optima Nova
