Omar Tchiani atau Abdourahamane Tchiani adalah seorang jenderal tentara Niger dan komandan pengawal presiden Niger.[1] Ia memainkan peran kunci dalam kudeta Niger 2023 dengan menangkap presiden Mohamed Bazoum.[2] Ia diangkat sebagai Presiden de-facto Niger sebagai Ketua Dewan Nasional Perlindungan Tanah Air oleh sembilan orang junta militer pada 26 Juli 2023, beberapa jam setelah kudeta.

Biografi

Menurut laporan kantor berita APA, Tchiani berasal dari Region Tillabéri, daerah perekrutan utama tentara Niger, di bagian barat negara itu.[3]

Pada 2015, dia mengambil alih komando pengawal presiden dan merupakan sekutu dekat Presiden Mahamadou Issoufou saat itu. Pada tahun 2021, dia memimpin unit tersebut dalam menggagalkan percobaan kudeta ketika sebuah unit militer mencoba merebut istana kepresidenan beberapa hari sebelum Issoufou mengundurkan diri untuk memberi jalan bagi penggantinya yang terpilih secara demokratis, Mohamed Bazoum, yang mempertahankan Tchiani di jabatannya.[3]

Perebutan kekuasaan

Pada 26 Juli 2023, Tchiani memimpin pengawal presiden menahan Bazoum di istana presiden di ibu kota Niamey sebagai bagian dari kudeta Niger 2023. Kudeta itu dilaporkan dipimpin oleh Tchiani, yang menurut para analis Bazoum telah berencana untuk mencopot dari posisinya.[4]

Pada 28 Juli, Tchiani memproklamasikan dirinya sebagai presiden Dewan Nasional Perlindungan Tanah Air dalam pidato di televisi pemerintah. Dia mengatakan kudeta dilakukan untuk menghindari "kehancuran bertahap dan tak terelakkan" negara itu, dan mengatakan bahwa Bazoum telah berusaha menyembunyikan "kenyataan keras" negara itu, yang dia sebut "tumpukan orang mati, terlantar, penghinaan dan frustrasi". Dia juga mengkritik strategi keamanan pemerintah karena dianggap tidak efektif tetapi tidak memberikan batas waktu untuk kembali ke pemerintahan sipil.[5][6][7]
