Nathanael (Ibrani נתנאל, "pemberian Allah") dari Kana di Galilea adalah pengikut atau rasul Yesus yang hanya disebutkan dalam Yohanes 1–21.

Riwayat

Dalam Injil Yohanes, Natanael diperkenalkan sebagai teman Filipus, dari Bethsaida.[1] Murid-murid pertama yang dipanggil Yesus semuanya dikisahkan menyebarkan ajaran-Nya ke keluarga atau teman; sehingga, Filipus mendatangi Natanael dan berkata kepadanya, “Kami telah menemukan Dia, yang disebut oleh Musa dalam kitab Taurat dan oleh para nabi, yaitu Yesus, anak Yusuf dari Nazaret”.[2]

Nathanael awalnya disebut bersikap skeptis soal apakah Mesias datang dari Nazareth dengan berkata: "Mungkinkah sesuatu yang baik datang dari Nazaret?".[3] Namun, ia menerima undangan Filipus untuk menjumpainya. Yesus langsung menyebutnya sebagai "seorang Israel sejati, tidak ada kepalsuan di dalamnya!".[4] Beberapa cendekiawan bahwa pernyataan Yesus "Sebelum Filipus memanggil engkau, Aku telah melihat engkau di bawah pohon ara.", berdasarkan pada figur pidato Yahudi, yang merujuk kepada pembelajaran Taurat. Natanael mengakui Yesus sebagai "Putra Allah" dan "Raja Israel".

Ia muncul kembali (sebagai "Natanael dari Kana") pada akhir Injil Yohanes, sebagai salah satu murid yang hadir saat Yesus berada di Laut Galilea setelah Kebangkitan.[1][5]

Natanael sering kali disamakan dengan Bartolomeus yang disebutkan dalam Injil-Injil Sinoptik dan Kisah Para Rasul 1:13.[1][6]
