Muhammad bin Aslam Al-Ghafiqi

Muhammad bin Aslam Al-Ghafiqi adalah ahli bedah, apoteker dan ahli penyakit mata Arab-Andalusia. Ia adalah dokter pertama yang melakukan operasi katarak di mata manusia.[1]

Ia juga merupakan seorang ahli botani pada masanya. Ia mengoleksi beragam jenis tumbuh-tumbuhan yang diperolehnya dari wilayah Spanyol dan Afrika. Ia membuat catatan lengkap dan detail yang menggambarkan secara akurat jenis-jenis koleksi tumbuhannya. Deskripsi tentang tumbuh-tumbuhan yang dibuat olehnya diakui sebagai karya yang paling membanggakan yang pernah dibuat seorang Muslim. Ia memberi nama setiap tanaman dalam tiga bahasa, yaitu bahasa Arab, bahasa Latin dan bahasa Berber.[2]

Dalam bidang farmakologi, ia menulis kitab Al Adawiyah al Mufradah (Uraian tentang berbagai macam obat). Karya tersebut berisi sekitar 400 gambar tanaman dan hewan yang digambar dan berwarna yang dikenal sebagai “Herbal Al Ghafiq”. Risalah tersebut memaparkan tentang pendekatan dalam metodelogi, eksperimen, serta observasi dalam farmakologi dan farmasi.[2]

Dalam bidang oftalmologi, ia menulis kitab Al Murshid Fil Kuhl. Ia banyak merujuk kepada karya Ammar bin Ali Al Mosuli tetapi lebih menekankan penelitian pada jaringan otak yang berhubungan dengan mata.[2]
