"Mother" adalah judul lagu John Lennon yang pertama kali dirilis bersama album John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band pada tahun 1970. Sebuah versi edit dirilis sebagai singel oleh Apple Records di Amerika Serikat tiga minggu setelah perilisan album.

Latar belakang

Mother adalah lagu yang menceritakan tangisan John Lennon untuk bapak dan ibunya yang menelantarkan dirinya saat kecil. Sang bapak, Alf, meninggalkan keluarga ketika John masih bayi. Sang ibu, Julia, tidak tinggal dengan putranya, walau mereka berhubungan baik. Ia tewas ditabrak mobil pada tanggal 15 Juli 1958 oleh polisi mabuk bernama Eric Clague, pada saat John berusia 17 tahun. Ia mengungkapkan kehilangan orangtuanya dengan lirik: "Mother, you had me/but I never had you"; "Father, you left me/but I never left you".

"Mother" dimulai dengan bunyi lonceng gereja pada saat pemakaman. John terinspirasi untuk menulis lagu setelah melakukan terapi primal dengan Dr Arthur Janov pada awalnya di Tittenhurst Park dan kemudian di Primal Institute, California, dimana mereka tetap berada di sana untuk 4 bulan. John, yang pada akhirnya mencibir Janov, awalnya menyebutkan sesi terapi sebagai "sesuatu yang lebih penting daripada The Beatles."[1]

Walau ia menganggap "Mother" sebagai lagu yang "rasanya mempengaruhi kepala", ia tidak menginginkan perilisannya dan lebih memilih "Love" sebagai singel.[2]
