Mitra bestari akademik atau telaah sejawat cendekia (bahasa Inggris: scholarly peer review) adalah proses penilaian karya ilmiah, penelitian, atau gagasan seorang penulis di bawah pengawasan orang lain yang ahli di bidang yang sama, sebelum makalah yang menjelaskan karya ini diterbitkan dalam jurnal, tata cara konferensi atau sebagai sebuah buku. Penelaahan sejawat akademik membantu penerbit (yaitu, kepala redaksi, dewan editorial atau panitia program) memutuskan apakah sebuah karya harus diterima, dianggap dapat diterima dengan pendaan, atau ditolak.

Penelaahan sejawat akademik membutuhkan komunitas para ahli di bidang tertentu (dan sering kali didefinisikan secara sempit), yang memenuhi syarat dan mampu melakukan tinjauan yang tidak memihak. tinjauan yang tidak memihak, terutama terhadap karya di bidang yang kurang umum atau antara disiplin ilmu, mungkin sulit untuk dicapai, dan signifikansi (baik atau buruk) dari suatu gagasan tidak pernah dapat dihargai secara luas di antara orang-orang sezamannya. Penelaahan sejawat akademik umumnya dianggap perlu untuk menentukan mutu akademik dan digunakan di sebagian besar jurnal ilmiah utama dan tepercaya, tetapi dengan adanya sistem ini bukan berarti mencegah penerbitan penelitian yang tidak absah. Secara adati, mitra bestari atau peninjau sejawat akademik biasanya tanpa nama, tetapi saat ini terdapat sejumlah besar tinjauan terbuka, di mana tinjauan tersebut dapat dilihat oleh pembaca, umumnya identitas sang peninjau juga diungkapkan.
