Metalisitas

Di dalam astronomi dan fisika kosmologi, metalisitas, kelogaman, atau kadar logam (bahasa Inggris: metallicity) dari sebuah objek astronomi adalah proporsi massa unsur kimia selain hidrogen dan helium. Karena hampir semua benda yang terlihat di alam semesta adalah bintang, yang sebagian besar terdiri dari hidrogen dan helium, astronom, untuk mudahnya menggunakan istilah "metal" untuk menggambarkan semua unsur yang lebih berat dari hidrogen dan helium. Sebagai contoh, jika sebuah nebula kaya akan unsur karbon, nitrogen, oksigen, dan neon akan disebut "kaya metal" dalam peristilahan astrofisika, meskipun unsur-unser tersebut bukanlah metal atau logam dalam arti kimia. Istilah ini tidak boleh dicampur dengan definisi "metal" pada umumnya, ikatan logam dalam arti kimia tidaklah mungkin di dalam inti bintang, dan ikatan-ikatan kimia hanya mungkin terjadi pada kulit terluar bintang kelas K atau M yang dingin. Sifat-sifat kimia umum tidaklah mempunyai arti dan relevansi di dalam inti bintang.

Metalisitas dari sebuah objek astronomi bisa memberi petunjuk umur objek itu. Ketika alam semesta terbentuk, menurut teori big bang, awalnya terdiri dari hidrogen, yang kemudian melalui nukleosintesis purba, menghasilkan helium dalam jumlah cukup besar, serta litium dan berilium dalam jumlah sangat kecil, dan tidak ada unsur lainnya. Jadi bintang-bintang tua memiliki metalisitas lebih rendah dibandingkan bintang yang lebih muda seperti matahari.

Cara menghitung

Metalisitas dinyatakan sebagai fraksi "[Fe/H]", yang menyatakan logaritma dari perbandingan kelimpahan besi di dalam bintang dengan kelimpahan di dalam Matahari (besi bukanlah elemen berat paling berlimpah, namun hanya salah satu unsur yang kelimpahannya paling mudah diukur melalui spektrum dalam panjang gelombang tampak.). Rumus untuk logaritma tersebut dinyatakan sebagai berikut:

dengan dan masing-masing adalah jumlah atom besi dan hidrogen per satuan volume. Dengan perumusan ini, bintang dengan metalisitas lebih tinggi daripada Matahari akan memiliki harga logaritmik positif, sementara yang memiliki metalisitas lebih rendah daripada Matahari memiliki harga negatif.
