London Eye atau disebut juga Millennium Wheel adalah sebuah roda pengamatan yang terbesar di dunia setinggi 135 meter atau 443 kaki. London Eye berputar di atas Sungai Thames, London, Britania Raya dan mulai beroperasi pada akhir 1999.

Sejarah

London Eye dirancang oleh arsitek David Marks dan Julia Barfield dengan 32 buah kapsul pengamatan tertutup yang ber-Air Conditioner di sisi luar lingkarannya. London Eye berputar dengan kecepatan 0,26 meter/detik dan satu kali keliling memakan waktu sekitar 30 menit atau setengah jam. Dengan kecepatan tersebut, London Eye tidak perlu berhenti saat penumpang akan masuk kecuali untuk yang kurang mampu.

Roda ini dibangun per bagian yang kemudian diapungkan dan dirakit di Sungai Thames. Penegakan terdiri dari dua tahap. Tahap pertama, roda ditegakkan 2° per jam sampai mencapai 65°. Seminggu kemudian, tahap kedua dilaksanakan.

The Eye, sebutan untuk London Eye, diresmikan oleh Perdana Menteri Britania Raya Tony Blair pada 31 Desember 1999 namun baru dibuka untuk publik pada Maret 2000 karena masalah teknis.

London Eye dioperasikan oleh Tussauds Group dan disponsori British Airways yang menggunakan istilah fly dan flight untuk menggambarkan perjalanan di London Eye. Seiring berjalannya waktu, London Eye menjadi objek pariwisata yang terkenal dan menjadi ikon London. Warga London pun menyambut hangat London Eye, lebih hangat dari sambutan terhadap Millennium Dome, dan sampai Juli 2002 8,5 juta orang telah "terbang" di London Eye.

Rekor London Eye sebagai roda pengamatan tertinggi di dunia dalam Guinness Book of Records akan segera tersaingi karena popularitas London Eye menginspirasikan pembangunan struktur serupa di berbagai tempat. Las Vegas merencanakan membangun sebuah roda pengamatan setinggi 170 m dan Shanghai juga berniat membangun setinggi 200.
