Leon Blum

Leon Blum

Leon Blum (lahir 9 April 1872 di Paris, Prancis - meninggal 30 Maret 1950 di Jouy-en-Josas, Prancis pada umur 77 tahun) adalah seorang negarawan dan sosialis pertama yang terkemuka asal Prancis.[1][2] Ia pernah memimpin pemerintah koalisi Front Populer pada tahun 1936 hingga 1937.[1] Ia memberlakukan program reformasi sosial terbesar dalam sejarah Prancis.[2]

Blum lahir dalam sebuah keluarga Yahudi Alsatian.[1] Ia menempuh pendidikannya di École Normale Supérieure, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan belajar hukum di Universitas Sorbonne.[1] Blum lulus pada tahun 1894 dengan penghargaan tertinggi, dan setelah itu ia dikenal sebagai kritikus sastra dan drama yang cerdas.[1][2] Peristiwa Dreyfus membawa Blum ke dalam politik aktif di sisi republik Dreyfusard.[1] Dalam peristiwa tersebut Blum menjadi dekat dengan Jean Jaurès, yaitu seorang tokoh yang ia sangat dikagumi, yang pada akhirnya menyebabkan Blum bergabung dengan Partai Sosialis Prancis Jaurès pada tahun 1904.[1] Blum pertama kali terpilih menjadi anggota Dewan Perwakilan pada tahun 1919.[1] Tugas pertama yang ia lakukan ialah merekonstruksi Partai Sosialis setelah perpecahan pada Desember 1920, ketika pecahan Partai Komunis memenangkan jumlah mayoritas di Kongres Tours.[1]
