Lawas

Lawas (bahasa Melayu: Pekan Lawas) adalah kota kecil dan ibu kota Distrik Lawas, Bagian Limbang, Sarawak, Malaysia. Luas wilayah distrik ini adalah 3.811,90 kilometer persegi, dan jumlah penduduk berdasarkan sensus tahun 2020 adalah 46.200 jiwa. Kota ini berjarak 1.200 km dari ibu kota negara bagian, Kuching dan 200 km dari ibu kota Sabah, Kota Kinabalu.

Etimologi

Terdapat beberapa versi tentang asal usul nama "Lawas". Nama ini konon berasal dari bahasa Melayu "Luas". Pada zaman dahulu, orang-orang cenderung menetap di daerah yang luas sehingga lahirlah kota ini. Dalam versi cerita yang lain, dahulu kala ada sekelompok pedagang yang diserang dan dikejar oleh bajak laut di muara sungai Lawas. Para pedagang berhasil bersembunyi di tengah hutan dan para bajak laut tidak dapat menemukan mereka. Merasa lega dan aman, para pedagang kembali ke laut. Dalam dialek setempat, "Lawas" berarti "lega, aman, dan terlindungi".[1]

Iklim

Lawas memiliki iklim hutan hujan tropis (Af) dengan curah hujan lebat hingga sangat lebat sepanjang tahun.
