Kutukan (juga disebut nasib sial, guna-guna atau rasa benci) adalah sebuah keinginan yang mengeskpresikan beberapa bentuk kesengsaraan atau kemalangan yang akan menimpa atau jatuh ke beberapa entitas lain (orang, tempat, atau benda). Secara khusus, "kutukan" mungkin merujuk pada keinginan yang merugikan atau rasa sakit yang akan ditimbulkan oleh kekuatan supernatural, seperti mantra, doa, kutukan, rasa benci, sihir, santet, Tuhan, kekuatan alam, atau roh. Dalam banyak sistem kepercayaan, kutukan itu sendiri (atau ritual yang menyertainya) dianggap memiliki beberapa kekuatan hasil penyebab. Untuk membalikkan atau menghilangkan kutukan disebut penghapusan atau penghancuran, dan sering diyakini juga memerlukan ritual rumit atau doa.[1]

Bentuk

Banyak studi yang mengatakan bahwa kutukan merupakan bagian dari studi mengenai agama tradisional dan cerita rakyat. Oleh karena itu, kutukan sering kali dianggap sebagai bagian dari praktik sihir. Dalam budaya Hindu, orang bijak atau Rishi mengatakan bahwa kutukan dapat memiliki kekuatan untuk memberkati (Āshirvada atau Vara) dan mengutuk (Shaapa). Misalnya kutukan yang diberikan oleh Rishi Bhrigu kepada Raja Nahusha.[2] Kutukan seringkali disebut dengan nama-nama khusus dalam berbagai budaya:

  • HoodooAfrika-Amerika menyajikan kepada kita tentang kutukan dan kondisi yang disilangkan, serta suatu bentuk sihir jalur kaki yang digunakan oleh Ramandeep, di mana benda-benda terkutuk diletakkan di jalur korban dan diaktifkan ketika dilewati.
  • Dalam budaya Timur Tengah dan Mediterania sumber kepercayaan pada mata jahat (evil eye) dimana merupakan hasil dari iri hati atau tak jarang juga disebut sebagai hasil dari kutukan. Agar terlindung dari evil eye, benda pelindung tersbeut harus terbuat dari kaca bulat berwarna biru tua dengan lingkaran putih di bagian tengah, dimana merepresentasikan seperti mata manusia.
  • Tradisi Jerman, termasuk orang Belanda di Pennysylvania, menyebut kata hexing (dari kata hexen, kata dalam Bahasa German yang berarti ilmu sihir) dan hex yang umum digunakan pada masa lalu oleh penyihir kandang yang menyebabkan susu sapi mengering dan kuda lumpuh.
