Kornea

Kornea atau selaput bening adalah bagian depan mata yang tembus pandang yang menutupi iris dan pupil.^[1] Bila kornea disentuh maka kelopak mata akan menutup secara refleks. Kornea tidak memiliki pembuluh darah. Kontribusi kornea selain sebagai pertahanan fisik dan kimia bola mata juga sebagai komponen media refraktif berkekuatan 40-44 Dioptri. Kornea memiliki tingkat kelengkungan yang bervariasi dari kelengkungan kecil (landai) pada tepi luar kornea dan kelengkungan besar (curam) pada pusat tengah kornea, dengan demikian kornea mampu membiaskan cahaya yang datang dari luar untuk diteruskan melewati komponen media refraktif lain di dalam bola mata. Kornea memiliki lapisan yang tersusun dari ektoderm permukaan yaitu epitel, tersusun dari sel krista neural yaitu keratosit dan sel endotel, sel penyokong seperti sel Langerhans (imunitas), juga komponen aselular yang banyak dan tebal di lapisan stroma, Bowman, serta Descemetnya. Lapisan kornea secara berturut-turut dari luar ke dalam yaitu epitel, Bowman, stroma, Descemet, endotel. Di antara seluruh lapisan kornea, stroma membentuk sebanyak 80-85% lapisan kornea dan bentuknya tersusun paralel dari serat-serta kolagen seperti kolagen tipe I, VI, dan XII diliputi oleh matriks ekstraselular. Matriks ekstraselularnya tersusun dari kolagen tipe I, III, V, VI, dan glikosaminoglikans. Struktur stroma ini juga unik karena dibandingkan jaringan penyokong lainnya di seluruh tubuh, kolagen stroma tersusun lebih padat dan menempel erat satu sama lain sehingga memberikan bentuk makroskopis kornea yang jernih dan tembus cahaya.^[2]
