Kaum awam Katolik di Lapangan Santo Petrus, Vatikan

Kaum awam katolik adalah kaum awam dari Gereja Katolik yang bukan pastor atau penerima Tahbisan Suci atau bersumpah untuk hidup dalam tatanan religius atau bagian dari kongregasi religius. Misi mereka, menurut Konsili Vatikan Kedua, adalah untuk "menguduskan dunia".

Kaum awam membentuk mayoritas dari perkiraan lebih dari satu miliar umat Katolik di dunia.[1]

Gereja Katolik dilayani oleh yurisdiksi universal dari Takhta Suci, dipimpin oleh Paus, dan dikelola oleh Kuria Roma, sementara secara lokal dilayani oleh Uskup keuskupan. Paus dan para uskup dalam persekutuan penuh dengannya dikenal secara kolektif sebagai hierarki Katolik, dan bertanggung jawab atas pengawasan, manajemen, dan reksa pastoral semua anggota Gereja Katolik, termasuk klerus, religius, dan awam.[2] Namun sejak Konsili Vatikan II para Uskup (1962–1965) kaum awam telah muncul sebagai sumber kepemimpinan yang lebih besar dalam berbagai aspek kehidupan gereja; dan ajarannya tentang kesetaraan mereka panggilan untuk kekudusan telah menghasilkan pengakuan yang lebih besar atas peran mereka di gereja.[3]
