Kapal perusak kelas Hobart

Kapal perusak kelas Hobart adalah kelas kapal yang terdiri dari tiga kapal perusak perang udara (Air Warfare Destroyers/AWDs) yang dibangun untuk Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Perencanaan kapal untuk menggantikan frigat kelas Adelaide dan memulihkan kemampuan yang terakhir ditunjukkan oleh kapal perusak kelas Perth dimulai pada tahun 2000, awalnya di bawah proyek akuisisi SEA 1400, yang dinamai ulang SEA 4000. Meskipun sebutan "Perusak Peperangan Udara" digunakan untuk menggambarkan kapal yang didedikasikan untuk pertahanan angkatan laut (ditambah aset darat) dari serangan pesawat dan rudal, kapal perusak Australia yang direncanakan diharapkan juga beroperasi diperan dukungan anti-permukaan, anti-kapal selam dan artileri angkatan laut.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Perencanaan untuk Australian Air Warfare Destroyer (sebagai kelas yang dikenal hingga 2006) berlanjut hingga pertengahan 2000-an, dengan pemilihan sistem tempur Aegis sebagai sistem tempur yang dimaksudkan dan ASC Pty Ltd (ASC) sebagai pembuat kapal utama pada tahun 2005. Pada akhir 2005, Aliansi AWD dibentuk sebagai konsorsium dari Organisasi Materiel Pertahanan (DMO), ASC, dan Raytheon.[7][8][9]
