Jean-François Champollion adalah seorang ahli kebudayaan berkebangsaan Prancis.[1] Dia lahir pada tanggal 23 Desember tahun 1790 di Figeac dan meninggal dunia saat 5 maret 1832 di Paris.[1] Saat usia 16 tahun, Champollion sudah mampu menguasai 6 bahasa Oriental kuno ditambah dengan bahasa Latin dan juga Yunani.[2] Lalu setelah mencapai umur 19 tahun, dia melanjutkan studi ke Paris, Champollion menjadi profesor bidang sejarah di lycée of Grenoble, yakni sejak 1809 sampai 1816.[2] Pada 1821-1822, dia mulai menerbitkan makalah dalam hieroglif.[2] Champollion menjadi kepala museum koleksi (benda-benda) Mesir di Louvre (1826) dan pernah memimpin ekspedisi arkeologi ke Mesir tahun 1828.[2]

Champollion juga merupakan penelaah hieroglif.[1] Salah satu judul karangannya adalah Lettre a Monsieur Dacier pada tahun 1822.[1] Dia juga menuliskan buku tentang hieroglif yang mana buku ini penting untuk Egyptologi di College de France.[1] Selain itu, karyanya yang lain adalah Précis du système hiéroglyphique des anciens Égyptiens (Primer of the Hieroglyphic System of the Ancient Egyptians) pada tahun 1824.[2]
