Hukum Kanonik Gereja Ortodoks Timur

Hukum Kanon Gereja Ortodoks Timur terdiri dari peraturan gerejawi yang diakui oleh otoritas Gereja Ortodoks Timur, bersama dengan disiplin, studi, dan praktik yurisprudensi Ortodoksi Timur.[1] Dalam Gereja Ortodoks Timur, hukum kanon merupakan standar perilaku yang bertujuan untuk menerapkan dogma dalam situasi praktis dalam kehidupan sehari-hari umat Kristen Ortodoks Timur.[2] Berbeda dengan hukum kanon Gereja Katolik Roma, hukum kanon Ortodoks Timur bersifat korektif, bukan preskriptif, yang berarti hukum tersebut dirumuskan sebagai jawaban atas pertanyaan, tantangan, atau situasi tertentu.

Hukum kanon Ortodoks Timur adalah bagian formal dari hukum ilahi,[3] dan pada akhirnya bertujuan untuk meningkatkan "kesempurnaan rohani" anggota gereja.[4] Hukum kanon Gereja Ortodoks Timur tidak terkodifikasi; korpusnya tidak pernah diorganisasikan atau diselaraskan menjadi suatu kode formal hukum gerejawi. Akibatnya, beberapa kanon Ortodoksi Timur bertentangan satu sama lain, seperti kanon yang berkaitan dengan penerimaan bidat di Gereja dan keabsahan sakramen-sakramen mereka.[5]

Tujuan

Umat Kristen Ortodoks Timur percaya bahwa ketika Yesus Kristus menugaskan Gereja Ortodoks Timur—sebuah komunitas manusia fana—dengan tugas menyelamatkan jiwa, Dia mewajibkan gereja untuk memiliki hukum kanon sebagai sarana yang diperlukan untuk kelangsungan hidupnya. Umat Kristen Ortodoks Timur percaya bahwa tujuan hukum kanon mereka adalah untuk membantu Gereja Ortodoks Timur mengorganisasi dirinya sendiri, mengawasi ortodoksi para anggotanya, dan untuk mencegah faksionalisme dalam Gereja Ortodoks Timur. Singkatnya, umat Kristen Ortodoks Timur percaya bahwa Yesus Kristus mewajibkan Gereja Ortodoks Timur untuk memberikan seperangkat aturan agar Gereja dapat bertahan.[4]
