Grenadier

Grenadier adalah istilah yang berasal dari bahasa Prancis yang awalnya mengacu kepada pasukan dengan peran khusus untuk melempar granat pada pertengahan hingga akhir abad ke-17. Pada masa itu, yang dapat menjadi grenadier adalah pasukan terkuat dan terbesar. Kemudian, pada abad ke-18, peran khusus untuk melempar granat tidak lagi diperlukan, tetapi anggota grenadier biasanya memiliki fisik yang sangat kuat, sehingga mereka dipilih untuk melakukan penyerbuan. Grenadier juga sering kali memimpin penyerbuan perbentengan yang telah berhasil ditembus selama pengepungan, walaupun peran ini biasanya dijalankan oleh satuan sukarelawan yang disebut forlorn hope.

Beberapa negara seperti Prancis (Grenadiers à Cheval de la Garde Impériale) dan Argentina (Regimiento de Granaderos a Caballo) telah mendirikan satuan-satuan Grenadier Berkuda dan Angkatan Darat Britania Raya juga pernah memiliki Garda Grenadier Berkuda. Seperti grenadier dalam bentuk infanteri, grenadier berkuda dipilih karena kekuatan dan besar tubuh mereka.

Pada masa modern, istilah ini juga mengacu kepada tentara yang dipersenjatai dengan pelontar granat.
