Gannett Company, Inc. merupakan sebuah perusahaan yang bergerak dalam bidang media yang berpusat di Tysons Cormer, Virginia didekat Washington DC..[2][3] Perusahaan ini merupakan penerbit surat kabar terbesar di Amerika Serikat jika dihitung dari total peredaran harian. Asetnya meliputi harian nasional USA Today and mingguan USA Weekend. Perusahaan ini juga merupakan penerbit koran non-nasional terbesar, salah satunya adalah The Arizona Republic di Phoenix, Arizona. Gannett juga memiliki dan atau mengoperasikan 46 stasiun televisi melalui Gannett Broadcasting, Inc. yang merupakan grup media terbesar yang beraffiliasi dengan NBC dan CBS.[4][5] Gannett juga memegang aset substansial dibidang media digital melalui Gannett Digital.

Sejarah

Gannett Company, Inc. didirikan oleh Frank Gannett pada tahun 1923 di Rochester, New York sebagai hasil pengembangan bisnis surat kabar yang telah dia dirikan di Elmira, New York pada tahun 1906. Gannett, menjadi perhatian dan terkenal karena dia membeli surat kabar independen kecil dan mengembangkannya menjadi suatu jaringan yang besar. Pada tahun 1979, jaringan tersebut sudah berkembang hingga 79 surat kabar di Amerika Serikat.[6]

Pada tahun 1979, Gannett mengakuisisi Combined Communications Corp., operator dari 17 stasiun televisi di Amerika Serikat, dan juga divisi periklanan outdoor, seharga $370 juta[7][8] (Divisi periklanan outdoor menjadi Gannett Outdoor, sebelum diakuisisi oleh Outdoor Systems (yang sebelumnya merupakan divisi dari 3M), sebelum dijual kepada Infinity Broadcasting, yang kemudian menjadi bagian dari Viacom, dan yang sekarang menjadi bagian dari CBS Corporation.)

Perusahaan ini pernah berpusat di Rochester sampai tahun 1986, dan kemudian berpindah ke Arlington County, Virginia. Kantor lamanya, yakni Gannett Building terdaftar dalam National Register of Historic Places pada tahun 1985.[9] Surat kabar tertua Gannett juga masih dalam peredaran yakni Leaf-Chronicle yang terletak di Clarksville, Tenessee. Pada tahun 2001, perusahaan ini berpindah ke kantor barunya di Tysons Corner, Virginia, pinggir kota Washington DC.
