Francis Xavier Clooney adalah seorang teolog yang memperkenalkan teologi komparatif dalam diskursus teologi agama-agama.[1] Ia adalah seorang Imam Yesuit dan Profesor di Harvard Divinity School, yang pernah tinggal di India dan Nepal untuk mempelajari Hinduisme.[1] Ia menggunakan teks-teks Hindu sebagai kacamata baru dalam ia melihat tradisi Kristen, agar dapat menggali pemahaman-pemahaman baru tentang tradisi Kristen.[2] Hal itu ia mengerti sebagai proses transformasi.[2] Ia mengambil bagian dari teks Hindu (Advaita Vedanta), kemudian membandingkannya dengan satu teks kristiani, yaitu Summa Theologiae karangan Thomas Aquinas, untuk memperoleh berbagai pandangan baru, bahkan kebenaran baru, dalam pemikiran Aquinas tersebut.[2]

Dalam berteologi komparatif, Clooney menyatakan perlunya bersifat inklusivistis, yang berbeda dengan posisi inklusivisme menurut tipologi tripolar.[2] Menurutnya pendekatan inklusif dilakukan dengan praktik membaca teks, bukan menggantikannya dengan sebuah teori tentang hal itu.[2] Clooney juga menyatakan bahwa seorang komparativis Kristen yang memegang teguh kebenaran Kristen namun mencoba mencari kebenaran dalam tradisi lain, tidak akan menghakimi salah satu kebenaran salah atau tak berguna.[2] Konflik antara dua klaim kebenaran kemungkinan akan berakhir tanpa kesimpulan akhir dan tanpa jawaban mengenai klaim yang benar.[2] Namun, komparasi antara dua tradisi untuk saling memperdalam tetap dapat dilakukan.[2]
