Distrik metropolitan

Distrik metropolitan (Bahasa Inggris: Metropolitan district atau Metropolitan borough) merupakan sebuah tipe distrik pemerintahan lokal yang digunakan di Inggris yang mencakup beberapa daerah perkotaan.

Distrik metropolitan pertama diciptakan pada tahun 1900 dengan dikeluarkannya UU London Government Act 1899 yang menciptakan 28 distrik metropolitan di sebagai subdivisi County London, yaitu: Battersea, Bermondsey, Bethnal Green, Camberwell, Chelsea, Deptford, Finsbury, Fulham, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith, Hampstead, Holborn, Islington, Kensington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Paddington, Poplar, Shoreditch, Southwark, St Marylebone, St Pancras, Stepney, Stoke Newington, Wandsworth, Westminster, Woolwich.

Pada tahun 1965, County London dihapuskan dan digantikan oleh Greater London melalui UU London Government Act 1963 . Ke-28 distrik metropolitan yang sebelumnya pun digabungkan menjadi 12 dari 32 borough London.

Setelah tahun 1974 dengan dikeluarkannya UU Local Government Act 1972 yang menempatkan 36 distrik metropolitan di berbagai county di Inggris. Distrik-distrik ini umumnya memiliki populasi antara 174.000 hingga 1 juta jiwa.
