Dhoby Ghaut adalah sebuah tempat di Singapura yang sering dikaitkan dengan Stasiun MRT Dhoby Ghaut, sebuah stasiun antar-penumpang utama untuk MRT Singapura. Dhoby Ghaut atau Dhobi Ghat (Hindi: धोबी घाट) (Punjabi: ਧੋਬੀ ਘਾਟ) (Tamil: தோபி காட்) secara harafiah berarti tempat mencuci dalam bahasa Hindi, dari dhobi yang berarti "pencuci" atau seseorang yang melakukan laundry dan ghat, secara umum berarti tempat yang luas. Di Singapura, Dhoby Ghaut terletak di ujung timur Orchard Road. Di atas stasiun MRT terdapat sebuah pusat perbelanjaan, yang disebut Plaza Singapura.

Etimologi dan Sejarah

Hingga awal 1900-an, para dhobi menggunakan air dari aliran yang jelas yang mengalir ke Sungai Bras Basah, yang sekarang dikenal sebagai Kanal Stamford. Aliran ini adalah saluran besar di samping Handy Road. Ghats, atau langkah-langkah yang mengarah ke sungai, dihancurkan ketika Sungai Bras Basah itu diubah menjadi kanal. Para dhobi kemudian akan mengeringkan cucian di Dhoby Green, taman terbuka yang dibatasi oleh Stamford Road, Handy Road, Bras Basah Road dan Prinsep Street.
