Deforestasi dan perubahan iklim

Deforestasi merupakan penyumbang utama perubahan iklim. Deforestasi dilakukan dengan cara melakukan penebangan hutan, sehingga lahannya dapat dialihfungsikan untuk penggunaan nir-hutan (non-forest-use), yakni seperti pertanian, peternakan, atau kawasan perkotaan.[1] Perubahan penggunaan lahan, terutama dalam bentuk deforestasi, adalah sumber pemanasan global emisi karbon dioksida atmosfer terbesar kedua, setelah pembakaran bahan bakar fosil.[2]

Hilangnya lahan hutan merupakan penyumbang emisi karbon yang besar yang mendorong pemanasan global, hampir sama dengan total emisi dari yang dihasilkan dari Amerika Serikat, yang merupakan pencemar terbesar kedua di dunia. Deforestasi menghancurkan habitat satwa liar dan merupakan alasan utama populasi satwa liar anjlok hingga setengahnya dalam 40 tahun terakhir, memulai kepunahan massal keenam.[3]
