Sejak diluncurkan pada tahun 2001, Wikipedia telah menimbulkan berbagai kontroversi. Sistem penyuntingan terbuka yang diterapkan oleh Wikipedia dapat digunakan oleh setiap orang untuk menyunting sebagian besar artikel telah menimbulkan kekhawatiran seperti kualitas tulisan, tingkat vandalisme, dan keakuratan informasi pada proyek tersebut. Media telah membahas berbagai peristiwa kontroversial dan skandal yang berkaitan dengan Wikipedia dan Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) sebagai organisasi pendanaannya. Topik yang umum dibahas antara lain artikel yang berisi informasi palsu, artikel yang disunting untuk para tokoh masyarakat dan perusahaan yang memiliki konflik kepentingan, penyuntingan berbayar, dan hubungan yang tidak menyenangkan antara penyunting Wikipedia dan para tokoh masyarakat.

Insiden biografi Seigenthaler menyebabkan kritik media terhadap keterandalan Wikipedia. Insiden ini bermula pada bulan Mei 2005, ketika adanya suatu unggahan anonim dari sebuah artikel Wikipedia yang berisi tuduhan palsu dan negatif mengenai seorang jurnalis Amerika Serikat yang terkenal bernama John Seigenthaler.[1] Pada bulan Maret 2007, Wikipedia kembali menjadi topik perhatian media dengan kontroversi Essjay, yang melibatkan seorang penyunting dan administrator Wikipedia bahasa Inggris terkemuka yang mengklaim bahwa dia adalah seorang "profesor agama yang sudah lama bekerja di sebuah universitas swasta" dengan "gelar Ph.D. di bidang teologi dan gelar di bidang hukum kanonik", padahal dia adalah seorang pemuda berusia 24 tahun yang tidak memiliki gelar sarjana.[2][3]
