Charles & Eddie adalah duo musik dari New York City yang menampilkan Charles Pettigrew dan Eddie Chacon.[1] Singel mereka, "Would I Lie to You?", dari album studio debut mereka, Duophonic (1992), memenangkan Penghargaan Ivor Novello pada tahun 1993 dalam kategori Lagu Kontemporer Terbaik, Lagu Terlaris, dan Hit Internasional Tahun Ini. Karier

Karier Charles & Eddie bermula apabila mereka dikatakan bertemu di Kereta Bawah Tanah New York City pada tahun 1990,[1] di kereta C; menurut Chacon, salah satunya membawa vinyl album Marvin Gaye, Trouble Man.[3][4] Charles dan Eddie mengeluarkan album studio debut mereka, Duophonic, lewat Capitol Records pada tahun 1992.[1] Album ini menampilkan singel " }Would I Lie to You?",[1] dan terinspirasi dari musik Soul klasik.[3]

Album studio kedua Charles dan Eddie, Chocolate Milk, menampilkan lagu "Wounded Bird", yang diciptakan dan direkam untuk film True Romance. Album studio ini dirilis pada tahun 1995.[5]

Pettigrew lahir dan tumbuh besar di Philadelphia.[1] Dia belajar menyanyi Jazz di Berklee College of Music di Boston,[1] dan menjadi penyanyi utama band Down Avenue,[6] yang memenangkan Rock 'N' Roll Rumble milik WBCN pada tahun 1985.

Pada tahun 1998, Pettigrew melakukan tur bersama Tom Tom Club (menampilkan Chris Frantz dan Tina Weymouth dari Talking Heads) dan kemudian bergabung dengan grup, ikut mencipta dan menyanyikan beberapa lagu sampai Pettigrew menjadi terlalu sakit untuk tampil.[7][8]

Pada tahun 1990-an, Pettigrew didiagnosis mengidap kanker. Charles Pettigrew wafat karena penyakit tersebut pada tanggal 6 April 2001, pada umur 37 tahun.[9]

Seorang Hispanik, Chacon dibesarkan di Hayward dan Castro Valley, California.[1] Dia memulakan band pertamanya pada umur 12 tahun bersama teman sekitar, Cliff Burton (kemudian dari Metallica) dan Mike Bordin (kemudian dari Faith No More). Pada awal umur 20-an tahun, Chacon bekerja sebagai penulis lagu untuk CBS Songs. Dia membuat album untuk Columbia Records dan Luther Campbell dari 2 Live Crew, keduanya belum dirilis. Selepas Charles and Eddie, yang juga menampilkan Pettigrew, bubar pada tahun 1997, Chacon bekerja sebagai fotografer dan direktur kreatif.[4][11]

Pada tahun 2020, Chacon merilis singel, "My Mind is Out of Its Mind", dari album studio solo debut, Pleasure, Joy and Happiness.[12] Proyek ini diproduseri dan diciptakan bersama oleh kolaborator Solange Knowles, John Carroll Kirby, dan didistribusikan oleh Light in the Attic Records.[13] Pada tanggal 15 Juli 2020, KCRW menayangkan perdana singel kedua, "Trouble", juga dari album studio itu. Pada tahun 2020, Chacon merilis singel, "High", bersama John Carroll Kirby dari Stones Throw Records dan pemain harpa, Nailah Hunter.

Album studio solo kedua, Sundown, dirilis oleh Stones Throw Records pada tanggal 31 Maret 2023.[14] Album ini mendapat peringkat tinggi dari publikasi termasuk Pitchfork,[15] Record Collector[16] dan The Guardian.

Pertanyaan yang menghantui Sundown adalah apakah kesuksesan tak terduga dari Pleasure, Joy and Happiness boleh ditiru. Jawabannya ternyata memenuhi syarat iya.[17]
