Tanda kait bawah atau cedilla (pengucapan bahasa Inggris: [sɨˈdɪlə]) atau cedille adalah sebuah kait (¸) yang ditambahkan di bawah huruf konsonan tertentu sebagai tanda diakritik untuk mengubah pengucapannya.

Asal

Ekornya muncul sebagai setengah bawah miniatur lengkungan "z" (zed). Kata "cedilla" adalah diminutif dari nama Spanyol untuk huruf ini ceda, dimana kata ini pertama digunakan.[1] Spanyol Modern tidak lagi menggunakan diakritik ini, meskipun masih ada di bahasa Portugis.[2] Bahasa Prancis menggunakan tanda diakritik ini dan memberikan bahasa Inggris pengucapan alternatif cedille dari kata Prancis cédille. Pengucapan awal cedilla adalah cerilla.[2] Penggunaan awal dalam bahasa Inggris dijelaskan oleh Oxford English Dictionary[2] adalah dalam sebuah kamus Spanyol-Inggris 1599.[3] Chambers' Cyclopædia[4] mengatakan ceceril pernah digunakan pada tahun 1738.[2]
