Bauk (mitologi)

Bauk (bahasa Serbia: Баук) adalah makhluk mitologis mirip binatang dalam mitologi Serbia.[1] Bauk digambarkan bersembunyi di tempat gelap, lubang, atau rumah kosong, menunggu untuk menangkap, membawa pergi, dan memangsa korbannya; tapi ia takut cahaya dan keramaian.[1] Ia memiliki gaya berjalan yang aneh (bauljanje), dan mengeluarkan suara seperti kata bau.[1]

Penafsiran terhadap petunjuk bauk mengarah pada kesimpulan bahwa bauk sebenarnya adalah gambaran beruang asli,[1] yang sudah punah secara regional di beberapa wilayah Serbia dan hanya dikenal sebagai legenda.[1] Kata "bauk" awalnya digunakan sebagai hipokorisme.[1]

Dalam budaya populer

Bauk digunakan sebagai terjemahan untuk goblin dalam karya JRR Tolkien edisi Serbia, yang pertama kali diterjemahkan oleh Mary dan Milan Milišić.[2] Bauk juga digunakan sebagai terjemahan Imp dalam seri A Song of Ice and Fire edisi Serbia, yang diterjemahkan oleh Nikola Pajvančić.[3]
