Basilika Minor Santo Yohanes Pembaptis, umumnya dikenal sebagai Gereja Taytay, adalah sebuah gereja basilika minor Katolik yang terletak di Taytay, Rizal, Filipina.

Sejarah

Para misionaris Fransiskan pertama kali tiba untuk mendirikan sebuah paroki di Taytay pada tahun 1579 dan membangun sebuah kapel yang terbuat dari bahan ringan di dekat tepi Laguna de Bay bernama "Visita de Santa Ana de Sapa," yang didedikasikan untuk santo pelindungnya, Yohanes Pembaptis. Para misionaris Yesuit mengambil alih administrasi paroki pada tahun 1591, dengan Pendeta Pedro Chirino menjadi pastor paroki. Di bawah pemerintahan Chirino, paroki tersebut dipindahkan dari tepi Laguna de Bay yang rawan banjir ke lokasi yang lebih tinggi di sebuah bukit yang disebut San Juan del Monte di mana paroki tersebut masih ada hingga saat ini.[1]

Selama masa jabatannya sebagai pastor paroki, Romo Chirino mulai mendokumentasikan bahasa Tagalog serta cara hidup orang Filipina dari interaksinya dengan penduduk, yang menjadi dasar bukunya "Relación de las Islas Filipinas".[2]

Sebuah gereja baru yang terbuat dari batu dibangun pada tahun 1599. Selesai pada tahun 1601, gereja ini dianggap sebagai gereja pertama yang dibangun oleh para Yesuit dari batu di luar Manila. Sebuah gereja yang lebih besar dibangun pada tahun 1630 oleh Pastor Juan de Salazar. Pada tahun 1632, angin topan menghancurkan atap gereja baru, yang segera diganti dengan bantuan warga kota. Gereja tersebut mengalami kerusakan parah pada tahun 1639 ketika Tiongkok membakar gereja tersebut dalam pemberontakan mereka melawan otoritas Spanyol.
