Bantam Books adalah penerbit asal Amerika Serikat yang dimiliki sepenuhnya oleh Random House, sebuah anak perusahaan dari Penguin Random House; merupakan jejak penting dari Kelompok Penerbitan Random House. Bantam Books didirikan pada tahun 1945 oleh Walter B. Pitkin, Jr., Sidney B. Kramer, Ian dan Betty Ballantine. Perusahaan ini pernah dibeli beberapa kali oleh perusahaan antara lainNational General, Carl Lindner's American Financial dan yang masih bertahan sampai sekarang adalah Bertelsmann; menjadikan sebagai bagian dari Random House pada tahun 1998, ketika Bertelsmann mengambil alih dari Bantam Doubleday Dell.[1] Bantam Books memulai kiprahnya dengan masuk pasar umum, kebanyakan mencetak ulang buku-buku bersampul tebal berasal dari buku bersampul tipis. Kemudian diperluas ke dalam penerbitan buku bersampul tipis dan tebal, termasuk karya asli, sering pula mencetak ulang untuk edisi pasar umum.

Masalah keuangan

Perusahaan ini mengalami kegagalan ketika Oscar Dystel, yang sebelumnya bekerja di Esquire dan editor di majalah Coronet ditunjuk mengelola pada tahun 1954. Sampai dengan akhir tahun berikutnya, perusahaan meraih keuntungan. Dystel berhenti sebagai ketua pada tahun 1980. Sejak saat itu Bantam menjadi penerbit terbesar untuk buku bersampul tipis, dengan menguasai 15% pasar, melebihi US$100 juta penjualan.[2]

Buku-buku yang diterbitkan

Bantam telah menerbitkan buku asli seluruh serial Choose Your Own Adventure dari buku anak-anak, termasuk novel asli waralaba yang diangkat dari Star Trek, menerbitkan lusinan buku antara tahun 1970 dan 1982, ketika izin penerbitan diambil alih oleh Pocket Books. Bantam juga menerbitkan lusinan volume cerita pendek adaptasi dari skrip Star Trek: The Original Series. Bantam merupakan penerbit buku bersampul tipis yang menerbitkan The Guinness Book of Records. Serial lainnya yang diterbitkan adalah Bantam War Book sejak dasawarsa 1970-san sampai dengan 1990-an, dengan mayoritas buku dari Perang Dunia II, tetapi ada juga dari Vietnam, Korea, dan konflik lain. Serial lainnya yaitu Bantam Classics Series, jejak fiksi Bantam Spectra, dan esdisi-edisi dari karya Shakespeare.
