Penemuan air di Bulan oleh Chandrayaan-1

Air Bulan adalah air yang terlihat di bulan. Ilmuwan menemukan adanya air magmatik atau air yang berasal dari bagian dalam bulan lalu muncul ke permukaan.

Bukti keberadaan air magmatik tersebut ditemukan dengan bantuan Moon Mineralogy Mapper milik Badan Penerbangan dan Antariksa Amerika Serikat (NASA) yang ada di wahana milik India, Chandrayaan-1. Rachel Klima, pakar geologi keplanetan dari Johns Hopkins University, memublikasikan temuan itu di jurnal Nature Geoscience.

Keberhasilan pengungkapan air magmatik di bulan dimulai dari hasil penelitian lima tahun lalu. Saat itu, ilmuwan mengungkap bahwa interior bulan tidak kering seperti yang diduga. Para ilmuwan juga berhasil menemukan air, berupa lapisan tipis yang diduga berasal dari angin matahari yang menumbuk permukaan bulan.

Penelitian tersebut tidak langsung memberi tanda keberadaan air magmatik. Namun, dari temuan itu ilmuwan bisa mengidentifikasi tipe batuan di kawah bulan bernama Bullialdus. Identifikasi ini membantu memecahkan asal muasal air.

Menurut ilmuwan, tipe batuan di kawah itu disebut norite. Batuan tersebut biasanya mengkristal dan terjebak saat magma keluar dari bagian dalam. Melalui penelitian selanjutnya, ilmuwan mengungkapkan bahwa jenis batuan ini tidak hanya ditemukan di kawah Bullialdus.

Dalam risetnya, Klima menganalisis lingkungan kawah Bullialdus dengan bantuan Moon Mineralogy Mapper. Terungkap bahwa kawah itu punya kandungan hidroksil lebih banyak dari lingkungannya. Hidroksil ialah molekul yang terdiri atas satu atom oksigen dan satu atom hidrogen, komponen penyusun air.

Menurut ilmuwan, wilayah kawah Bullialdus bukan merupakan wilayah yang terpapar angin matahari. Jadi, bila ada air di tempat itu, asalnya bukan dari tumbukan angin matahari dan permukaan bulan. Namun diduga kuat, hidroksil merupakan bukti adanya air magmatik.

Keberadaan air magmatik ini, menyuguhkan informasi baru akan proses vulkanik dan komposisi internal bulan seperti yang diberitakan Universe Today, Pemahaman akan hal tersebut akan membantu mengetahui proses pembentukan bulan serta perubahan proses magmatik.
