Panetije, filozof stoik s otoka Roda, proveo je izvjesno vrijeme u Rimu, što ga je nakon proučavanja određenih "slobodoumnijih" spisa (u odnosu na stoičku ortodoksiju) navelo na djelomično modificiranje stoičkog nauka. Na ovom mjestu treba spomenuti da je 129. pr. Kr. preuzeo dužnost skolarha u Ateni što je u priličnoj mjeri utjecalo na širenje i slušanost njegovih misaonih poniranja. Odmak od stoičkog radikalizma zrcali se poglavito u odnosu prema materijalnom, prema vanjskom u kojemu individua egzistira i djeluje.
