Ishpingo su aromatične osušene kupule ploda vrste Mespilodaphne quixos / sin. Ocotea quixos. U Ekvadoru se koriste kao začin, osobito za aromatiziranje tradicionalnog pića Colada Morada. Na izgled su tamnosmeđe, tvrde, zdjeličaste strukture koje ostaju nakon otpadanja ili odvajanja ploda.

Mespilodaphne, biljni rod iz porodice lovorovki. Izvorno područje rasprostranjenosti ovog roda je od Meksika do tropske Amerike.[1]

Ime

Ime je sastavljeno od: Mespilo- — od Mespilus, mušmula i -daphne — grč. dáphnē, lovor. Dakle Mespilodaphne znači otprilike “mušmulasti lovor”, “lovor nalik mušmuli”. Vjerojatno zbog izgleda listova ili općeg habitusa neke izvorne vrste.

Opis

Mespilodaphne Nees je jedan od onih “starih pa uskrslih” rodova lovorovki. Nees ga je objavio još 1833. u Linnaea 8: 45, a današnji Kew/POWO ga opet vodi kao prihvaćen rod iz porodice Lauraceae. Areal mu je Meksiko do tropske Amerike.

Taksonomski je bio dugo gurnut u Ocotea. Već su Bentham & Hooker 1880. držali Mespilodaphne sinonimom roda Ocotea, a Mez je 1889. prebacivao mnoge kombinacije iz Mespilodaphne u Ocotea. Ali noviji filogenetski radovi oko Ocotea-kompleksa opet su ga izvukli iz zaborava: Trofimov i suradnici 2019. govore o “reinstatement of Mespilodaphne”, tj. vraćanju roda u upotrebu.

Na popisau je kod Kewa 9 vrsta, od kojih 3 izdvaja kao korisne vrste M. cymbarum — medicina, M. quixos — hrana, lijek i otrov, te M. veraguensis — medicina.[2]
