שביל האפלצ'ים

שביל האפלצ'ים (באנגלית: Appalachian Trail) הוא שביל מטיילים בצפון אמריקה. אורכו כ-3,500 ק"מ והוא נפרש לרוב אורכה של מזרח ארצות הברית ממדינת מיין בצפון ועד מדינת ג'ורג'יה בדרום[1].

הנקודה הגבוהה אליה אפשר להעפיל דרך השביל נמצאת בהר וושינגטון, שם מגיע השביל עד לגובה של כאלפיים מטרים.

שביל האפלצ'ים הוא גם אחד משבילי המטיילים הפופולרים בעולם, אף על פי שתנאי הטבע בו אינם קלים. בחורף מתכסים חלק מההרים בשלג והנהרות קופאים, באביב מציקים היתושים והזבובים ואילו בקיץ חם שם מאוד ומסתובבים דובים בקרבת האדם. מאות אלפי אנשים מטיילים בו לאורך קטעים אחדים מדי שנה ויש בודדים המסיירים לכל אורכו במשך שנה תמימה. לאורך השביל הוקמו פונדקים ובקתות לינה כדי לארח את המבקרים הרבים.

שביל האפלצ'ים הוא אחד משלושת שבילי הכתר המשולש הארוכים (אנ'), לצד שביל הרכס הפסיפי היוצא מגבול ארצות הברית בקליפורניה עם מקסיקו ומסתיים בצפון בגבול ארצות הברית בוושינגטון וקנדה, ושביל קו פרשת המים של היבשת (אנ') המתחיל בגבול ארצות הברית – מקסיקו בניו מקסיקו ומסתיים בגבול ארצות הברית–קנדה שבמונטנה.

היסטוריה

באוקטובר 1921 פרסם בנטון מק-קיי (אנ') מאמר בכתב העת של המכון האמריקני לארכיטקטים (אנ') (כיום כתב העת "ארכיטקטורה" באנגלית) בו הציע לסמן שביל ארוך שיקשר בין חניוני הנופש השונים בהרי האפלצ'ים. המאמר הביא ל-16 שנים של מאמץ להקמת השביל באמצעות מתנדבים ממאות ארגונים וקהילות שעניינם היה הקמת שבילי מטיילים[2]. במהלך 16 השנים הללו, הוכשרו וסומנו קטעי שביל רבים ובשנת 1937 הוכרז על השלמת השביל[3]. בתקופת מלחמת העולם השנייה לא התקיימה אחזקה של הדרך, אך לאחריה היא חודשה, ובשנת 1951 הוכרזה השלמתו של השביל בפעם השנייה[3].
