באדום אזורים בהם הקרציה נמצאת בדרך כלל. בכחול אזורים אחר בהם דווח על הקרציה.

קרציית הכוכב הבודד (lone star tick, שם מדעי Amblyomma americanum) שכיחה באזורים עשירים בצמחייה במערב התיכון של ארצות הברית, אך התפשטה גם לאזורים אחרים. עקיצתה אינה מכאיבה ואינה מורגשת, היא נשארת צמודה למארח ומוצצת את דמו במשך כשבוע עד שהיא מלאה דם[1]. לנקבה בוגרת יש כתם לבן על הגב ומכאן שם הקרציה "הכוכב הבודד". לזכר יש פסים או נקודות בשולי השריון[2][3]. עקיצת הקרציה גורמת להתפתחות אלרגיה לבשר.

אזור מחיה

קרציית הכוכב הבודד נפוצה בארצות הברית במזרח, דרום-מזרח והמערב התיכון[2][4]. היא התפשטה גם לאזורים אחרים בארצות הברית כגון צפונה בניו יורק[5]. היא חיה באזורי חורש בשילוב של שיחים. נמצאת גם באזורי מעבר בין חברות צמחים כדוגמת אזור בין חורש לעשב[4]. הקרציה משתמשת בשיחים או עשב גבוה כדי להיצמד למארחים שלה, היא מטפסת במעלה הגבעול או עד קצה העלה ומותחת את רגליה הקדמיות, וכאשר בעל חיים חולף נוגע ברגליים היא נצמדת אליו[6]. לאחר שנצמדה למארח היא יכולה לעבור איתו לאזור אחר.

התפתחות

הקרציה עוברת את הגלגולים הרגילים של ביצה, זחל, נימפה ובוגר. היא ידועה כקרציה של 3 מארחים, פירוש הדבר שבגלגולים השונים היא ניזונה ממארחים שונים.

אלרגיה לבשר

עקיצת הקרציה עשויה לגרום לאדם לפתח אלרגיה לבשר[7]. התגובה האלרגית מופיע 4–8 שעות אחרי אכילת בשר, ובכך היא שונה מאלרגיות מזון אחרות שלרוב מופיעות מיד אחרי אכילת האלרגן. האלרגיה נגרמת על ידי המולקולה אלפא גאל, שעוברת מהקרציה לאדם. אלפא גאל היא פחמימה שקיימת באופן טבעי אצל כל היונקים, מלבד קופים ובני אדם שאיבדו את היכולת לייצר אלפא גאל לפני 20 מיליון שנה[8]. כאשר הקרציה עוקצת חיה כלשהי, למשל צבי או בונה, ולאחר מכן עוקצת אדם, היא עשויה להעביר ברוק שלה מולקולות אלפא גאל מדם החיה לאדם. בתגובה לחדירת אלפא גאל לדם הגוף מייצר נוגדני IgE, שאחראי על הרבה תגובות אלרגיות.

האלרגיה זוהתה לראשונה ב-2009 בדוח שתיאר 24 מקרים של אלרגיה לבשר ולתרופה ביולוגית נגד סרטן, בעקבות עקיצת הקרציה. תוך שנה התברר שמדובר במאות מקרים, ב-2012 התברר שמדובר באלפי מקרים בדרום ובמזרח ארצות הברית[9]. לאחר מכן דווח על אותו סינדרום של התפתחות אלרגיה לבשר גם באזורים אחרים בעולם, כולל אירופה ואוסטרליה בעקבות עקיצת קרציות מקומיות מסוג אחר.

מחלות אחרות

ככל הקרציות, קרציית הכוכב הבודד עשויה להעביר מחלות. הקרציה היא הנשא העיקרי של Ehrlichia chaffeensis שגורם ל monocytic ehrlichiosis בבני אדם, ול Ehrlichia ewingii שגורם לgranulocytic ehrlichiosis בבני אדם וכלבים[10].
