ספרקי ויליאמס (1954–1962) היה תוכון מצוי מדבר בעל אוצר מילים של יותר מ-500 מילים ושמונה שירים, הפך לסלבריטאי לאומי לאחר שהוביל קמפיין פרסום על האוכל לציפוורים של חברת קפרן, ויצר תקליט שמכר 20,000 עותקים. לאחר מותו, פיחלצו אותו, והציגו אותו במוזיאון הנקוק של ניוקאסל.

היסטוריה

ספרקי נולד (בקע מהביצה) בצפון מזרח אנגליה, ספרקי היה בבעלות אישה בשם מאטי וויליאמס, שגרה בפורסט הול, ליד ניוקאסל-אפון-טיין. ספאקרי קיבל את השם שלו אחרי שמאטי וויליאמס כינתה אותו "ניצונוץ קטן". היא לימדה אותו לדבר, ולדקלם שירים. לפסארקי היה אוצר עצום של מילים ואמירות. כשספארקי היה בן שלוש וחצי, הוא זכה בתחרות ה-BBC הבינלאומית לדקלום מילים מילים ביולי 1958. הוא היה כל כך טוב, ששנה אחרי זה לא איפשרו לו להשתתף בתחרות, בשביל לתת גם למועמדים האחרים הזדמנות. ספארקי היה תוכי מדהים ששינה את עולם התוכונים לתמיד.

האופרה בהשראת ספרקי מבוססת על היצירה Pretty Talk של מייקל ניימן משנת 1977. היצירה המקורית השתמשה בחומר מתקליט שנעשה על ידי חברת המזון לציפורים של Capern כדי לעזור ללקוחות ללמד את ציפורי המחמד שלהם לדבר. הדיסק הגמיש בגודל 7 אינץ' השמיע משפטים קצרים שנאמרו על ידי הבעלים של ספרקי, גברת וויליאמס, כדי לעודד את חיית המחמד שלה לדבר ואחריו תשובות מסרקי עצמו.^[1] האופרה, Sparkie: Cage and Beyond, כוללת הקלטות נוספות מארכיון "Sparkie" של האגודה להיסטוריה של הטבע של נורת'ומבריה. דיסק של Sparkie talking כבר יצא לאור.^[2]
