הטראומה הנפשית שברצח הוריו שימשה כסיפור המקור לדמותו של גיבור-העל באטמן.

בתרבות הפופולרית, סיפור מקור (באנגלית: Origin Story) הוא סיפור המעניק לקהל את הרקע שמגלה כיצד ומדוע דמות הפכה לפרוטגוניסט או לאנטגוניסט, ומוסיף לעניין ולמורכבות הכוללים של הסיפר. בתעשיית הקומיקס האמריקאית, סיפור המקור מציג גם את הדרך בה דמויות השיגו את כוחות העל שלהן ואת הנסיבות שבשמן הפכו לגיבורי או לנבלי-על.

על מנת לשמור על עדכניותן של דמויות והרלוונטיות שלהן, חברות קומיקס, קולנוע וטלוויזיה נוטות לשכתב לעיתים קרובות את מקורות הדמויות הוותיקות ביותר שלהן. זה נעשה באמצעות המשכיות רטרואקטיבית – הוספת פרטי מידע שאינם סותרים עובדות קודמות קיימות, אך משפיעים על הדמות ועולמה ויוצרים מעין אדפטציה חדשה עבורה. לדוגמה, חברת ההוצאה לאור מארוול קומיקס הציגה באירועי הקרוסאובר "החטא הקדמון" פרטים חדשים על עברן של דמויות באמצעות חיזיונות מבלי לבטל פרטים קודמים.

בספר "The Superhero Reader", שהועמד לפרס אייזנר, העורכים קבעו כי ”כמעט לכל גיבורי העל יש סיפור מקור: תיאור של האירועים הטרנספורמציים אשר מייחדים את הגיבור מן האנושות הרגילה... אם לא תנאי מוקדם לז'אנר גיבורי העל, המקור... הוא ללא ספק דימוי בולט ופופולרי שחוזר על עצמו בתדירות כה גבוהה כדי להציע רמזים לטבע המסורת העלילתית. לקרוא סיפורים על עולמות הרוסים, הורים שנרצחו, מוטציות גנטיות ומכשפים מעניקי כוח מסתוריים, זה להבין עד כמה ז'אנר גיבורי העל הוא על טרנספורמציה, על זהות, על הבדלים ועל המתח בין נוקשות פסיכולוגית לבין תחושת הגמישות והנזילות של טבע האדם”.[1]

בספר "Enter the Superheroes: American Values, Culture, and the Canon of Superhero Literature", פרופסורים לספרות אנגלית ציינו כי ”גיבורי-על מאד מסתבכים כשזה מגיע להיסטוריה שלהם, אבל חלק אחד מסיפוריהם נשאר קבוע וחשוב לנצח. אפילו יותר מסיפורי "מוות", קרוסאוברים, אירועים ושינויים במראה, סיפורי מקור הם ליבת קיומם של גיבורי העל. סיפורי מקור לא רק משקפים את ההקשרים הסוציו-היסטוריים בהם נוצרו נוצרו, אלא גם משקפים הבנה תרבותית של מה שעושה את סיפורי גיבורי העל ייחודיים”.[2]

התייחסות בתרבות פופולרית

בתרבות הפופולרית, עיסוק בסיפורי מקור, משולב בתוך הסיפר העיקרי, יכול להיות דוגמה למטא-בדיון או ארס פואטיקה.

  • בקומיקס "סליפר", מאת אד ברובייקר ושון פיליפס, המתרחש ביקום ויילדסטורם בעל הטון הריאליסטי, סיפורי המקור של הדמויות הוא נושא לשיחה ביניהן. בחוברת השישית, סיפור המקור של הדמות פיט בול נגמר במפתיע, זאת כאשר דמות אחרת, ביירון ג'ונס, קוטעת אותו בטענה שאיש לא שאל אותו מה הסיפור המקור שלו.[3]
  • הפרק "Heroic Origins", בעונה הרביעית של סדרת הטלוויזיה "קומיוניטי", עוסק כולו בסיפור המקור של הקבוצה באופן המודע לעצמו, כולל המשכיות רטרואקטיבית ומוטיבים אחרים השאולים מקומיקס.[4]
