חנקן דו־חמצני הוא תרכובת שנוסחתה NO₂. בטמפרטורת החדר תחמוצת חנקן זו היא גז רעיל, הפוגע בדרכי הנשימה ובריאות בפרט. צבעו חום וריחו חריף. החומר פאראמגנטי, על החנקן אלקטרון בלתי מזווג כך שהמולקולה היא רדיקל חופשי, שני הקשרים חנקן־חמצן חולקים אלקטרונים לא מאותרים כך שסדר הקשר הוא בין 1 ל־2.

חנקן דו־חמצני משמש כדלק לטילים ולתגובות ניטרציה. הוא מזהם אוויר הנוצר במנועי בעירה פנימית ונחשב לתחמוצת החנקן הנפוצה ביותר.

בדרך כלל מיוצר חנקן דו־חמצני מתגובה של חנקן חמצני (NO) עם חמצן אטמוספירי

במעבדה ניתן לייצר חנקן דו־חמצני בתהליך דו שלבי: פרוק חומצה חנקתית נותן דו חנקן חמש חמצני (N₂O₅) העובר אחר כך פרוק בחימום:

$2N_{2}O_{5}\Rightarrow 4NO_{2}+O_{2}$

NO2 נוצר גם מפרוק תרמי של כמה מלחי ניטראט למשל:

$2Pb(NO_{3})_{2}\Rightarrow 2PbO+4NO_{2}+O_{2}$

מחיזור חומצה חנקתית על ידי נחושת

$Cu+4HNO_{3}\Rightarrow Cu(NO_{3})_{2}+2H_{2}O+2NO_{2}$

בשל חולשת הקשר חנקן־חמצן במולקולה NO₂ הוא מחמצן חזק ועשוי להגיב בעצמה ולעיתים בפיצוץ עם תרכובות רבות כדוגמת פחמימנים.
